The Disco Diesels are fitted with the same exhaust system as the V8's. This is overkill as a turbo motor needs little in the way of exhaust silencers. The turbo is sufficient to isolate the exhaust from the pressure pulses emanating from the combustion chambers. Removal of a silencer or two causes little increase in noise and gives a small but useful increase in power , particularly at low revs (ie that terrible dead spot) Thats the theory , anway! I plucked up courage and had my Disco's main box removed yesterday and replaced by a straight thru section of pipe. Results? An extra rasp to the exhaust note and a noticeable , if small, improvement in power. See the "Tecno Babble" album in the "Gallery" for a pic. |

I doubt strongly whether this has any downside . I am however not an experienced motor mech. I base my judgement on the following : Several reputable Landy specialists have approved it (Landy Online , Da Gama Motors and others) Turbo temperature , head temperatureand exhaust gas temperature are all critical for a turbo diesel life span. Reducing back pressure in the exhaust can only help these factors : the hot exhaust gases will get out quicker and they will be cooler due to reduced pressure.(gases cool when they expand under reduced pressure) I guess what is of great importance is the drivers treatment of the engine : push it hard thru the gears to enjoy the raspier hxhaust note and any longevity gains could be blown aginst the wall ! Note that almost all exhaust specialists will not be happy - they will mumble on about tiuned exhaust lengths and minimum back pressure . I am told that this is of no consequence with a tubo diesel , because the turbo acts aa a "firewall" between the exhaust manifold and the rest of the exhaust system . Seems very logical to me - but once again I am not a mechanical expert ! Cheers Dave |

Having read this thread, I went out and did just that. Much better sounding with slight power gains. I said slight. The engine just seems to run smoother. No real EGT differences though. But thanks again now my td5 looks AND sounds the part. |

Interesting thought: About a year ago the exhaust on my RR quite literally fell apart; the back was not connected to the front, the daft thing is I genuinly didn't know until it was ona ramp adn we looked underneath (UK MOT Test). This makes sense as it is the same system as the V8 but mine is a BMW turbo diesel. The idea should save a few pannies nect time it needs a replacement! |
