Hi Everyone!

OK, now that yours truly is nearly back on track, lets get this Land Rover ball rolling …

For everyone that attended the AAD 2008 airshow and exhibition at Ysterplaat, this might be old news, but what a technology spectacle !!!  There were a couple of world firsts, notably the display of 2 SAA aircargo Boeing 737’s doing close formation flying … not something that you would wish to see everyday in commercial life !  The flying display of the South African designed and built Rooivalk attack helicopter sharing the airspace with the Russian Mi-24 helicopter was a sight to behold – really menacing looking machines of war.  And then there was the Land Rover exhibit, in camouflage no less.  And bristling with technology – Mrs Julie van Zyl, I have found the ideal Christmas gift for club’s Chief Marshal – see the image in this edition of how communication technology should be built into a Land Rover Defender.

On a serious note (not that armaments and weapons are not serious …), the credit crunch has left an uncomfortable number of Americans losing their homes and jobs.  The impact of this is that the demand for automobiles has fallen through the floor.  And that affects Land Rover big time – the Land Rover 3 - Discovery 3 for us) is Land Rover’s biggest seller, of which the bulk is/was sold in the USA.

For us here in RSA, the impact is going to be felt in the cost of spares and obtaining credit for that new Landy.  Now if you are a normal citizen, the monthly cost of those expensive capital items is really being felt and that new Landy may just have moved a little further into the future … !  If you are in the market for a Landy and you are not bound to first selling an existing vehicle, there are some good buys to be had since the major banks are repossessing vehicles at an alarming rate.  Personally I am feeling it in the delay to fix the Disco Tdi – summer is here, the money is not and the Disco is not yet up and running … sigh – does this sound familiar!

The next club activity is the last Points Event for the year.  Come and enjoy a fun day with the club at Vaatjie, which is just outside the northern border of the mother city, so it should be within reach of everyone, including series ones … (OK, I am ducking to avoid CV joints and half shafts flying past).

Also check out the CLRC Christmas function write-up.  It sounds like another great one as arranged by Venessa and company.  Please book well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Call for contributions:  Please, all reports/submissions are most welcome.  Remember this is our magazine.  Note that the deadline is the 20th of each month.  If anyone has any relevant photographs, please forward for inclusion in the newsletter.

Till next month, enjoy the South Easter and with it … Summer! … Finally  !!!

To all our new members, a hearty welcome and we hope you will enjoy the club and its activities!  Please introduce yourselves at the events and to the "old hands" - let's give them a real CLRC welcome!

In the Chief Marshal’s dreams – his wish for CLRC communication …
