Hi Everyone! Let me drop into the mud, both feet
simultaneously! I have to admit that the
Chief Marshal and Clerk of the Course as well as the Saturday night rain did
themselves proud by organising a nice technical last points event for the year
at Klipheuwel outside Durbanville! Two Discovery bumpers later and what sounded like a
broken front CV joint on Madala and the course was open to us mere
mortals! And what a nice challenge it
proved to be! No clear rounds, plenty of
penalty points and many gates missed and assistance and/or recoveries
required! The results in the "Chief
Marshals Twist" section of the newsletter does not give a reflection of
the mud and water encountered. (I am still finding mud in weird places on the
Disco 1)! Brian, we hope the punishment that Julie dished out
for nearly wrecking her car was not too severe - when were you discharged from
hospital? … and Patrick, we hope that
sound was not too expensive … ! Safety message for the month: We are entering silly season, so please by careful
out there. There was a recent report on
the Overland forum of a near lethal recovery
of a stuck vehicle. (see the images in
this newsletter). The issues that played
a role in the event involved inadequate recovery points (they used towballs
instead of proper recovery points), metal fatigue / poor welding and alcohol …
Don't drink and Recover … ! I can see
the cynical amongst us saying - "oh well in that case rather stay drunk (and stuck) …!" Call for contributions: Please, all reports/submissions are most
welcome. Remember this is our magazine. Note that the deadline is the 20th of each month. If anyone has any relevant photographs,
please forward for inclusion in the magazine. This will be last newsletter
for the year. The next edition will only
be issued towards the end of January 2008. Till next time, enjoy the
festive season and hope to see all of you safely and refreshed in the new year! Herbie Email: herbie.hellstrom@telkomsa.net Telephone 021
