Modifications to Daves Disco 2 : Body Lift
Modified By Dave on 4/27/2009 11:55:18 AM)

With the improved approach and departure angles allowed by the new front and rear bumpers , a further improvement has been acchieved via a body lift |: 40 mm spacers (14 of them ) have been used to raise the body 40 mm wrt to the chassis. engine and drive train. The advantage of a body lift is that the approach and departure and underbody clearance is improved , with only a small penalty in centre of gravity and stability.

The disadvantage is that there is a further increase in aerodynamic drag - so cruising at 140 km/h is not on !

The pic shows one of the 40 mm spacers ( just behind a front wheel)

Re: Modifications to Daves Disco 2 : Body Lift

Hi Dave,

I recently bought a D2 (2001 TD5), and would like to add rockslidders that incorporate high lift jacking points. I'd also like to do the 40mm bodlift you detail here. Did you do the lift yourself ? Is it as simple as 40mm spacers and longer mounting bolts ?

I am fortunate that my Father-in-law owns an engineering company so I can get simple bits like this made up no problem and have a nice big workshop with almost any tools you can think of at my disposal over weekends - so I'd like to make all parts and do the job myself.

Re: Modifications to Daves Disco 2 : Body Lift

Hi SS

The mod is a bit more complicated but not excessively so .

Bear in mind that with the body lift all items fixed to the body go up - while those fixed to the chassis stay down.

Bumpers are fixed to chassis so you need to address the gap between body and bumper...

Brake lines need to be released in places to allow for extra length.

The radiator mounting needs to be dropped so that radiator styas level with engine.

The gear lever will drop down so new gaiters have to be made up.

The fuel tank stays fixed , but fuel filler risese - so you need to keep an eye on the connection pipe.

You need to have a look at my car before proceeding - E mail me at daveandjudy@cybersmart.co.za if you wish.

Hein burnett of Burnco did the job for me.

Dave

Re: Modifications to Daves Disco 2 : Body Lift

Thanks Dave

I'll have to give it a bit more thought then. It may be easier to combine it with fitting new bullbars from Burnco, but still need to save a bit more cash before I am ready for that ...

Re: Modifications to Daves Disco 2 : Body Lift

Hein Burnett (from Burnco) also did mine last week and I must say, so far I am VERY impressed!

My front anti-roll bars have also been disconnected and (with the new OME suspension) there's hardly any body roll.

Articulation is OUT of THIS WORLD and the ride is firm (def. NOT hard) en handles very well.

Job WELL done!!
