unichip in td5

Hi everyone

I bought a defender 90 td5 recently and after checking some fuses, my dash i.e. speedo, rev counter, etc stopped working after a very bumpy 4x4 track, found a unichip, it is not connected, I took it to a motor power place and they figured I could just connect it, it shouldn't cause any problems, the thing that worries me a bit is why would the former owner unplug it and not mention it in the sale? So if you guys have any advice or used a similar chip on a td5 I would very much appreciate it. How would this chip influence the longlivety of the engine, captain (my landy) is not really a spring chicken, he has around 175k on the clock.

Thanks

Jean

Re: unichip in td5

 Hi Jean

You dont mention whether your dash etc is back working again ? I presume it was in fixing this problem that you came across this chip ?

There are many people driving TD5's at high mileage that are happy with the extra performance. However, the extra performance does not come without some penalty , despite what the tuners say. The biggest problem is possible excess heat  which the cooling system cannot get rid of, amongst other things leading to high Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGT) which can blow gaskets , warp heads and destroy turbos unless the driver is careful. Careful means having an EGT gauge fitted so you can back off if the EGT goes too high , or at least knowing when to back off. If you cant meet one or both of these conditions , stay away from the chip.

Otherwise simply "plug in and play " If it feels better and if you can avoid abusing the power - go for it.

Re: unichip in td5

Hi Dave

Thanks for the quick reply.

I got the dash back working, at R5 for a new fuse, which is awesome, I am new to landrovers, and everyone allways warn you about the costs etc, but I figured I'd take the risk, the defender's off road ability makes it worth it. And yes, while looking under the drivers seat at the fuses I found some loose cabels which led to the chip. I've got a little black box installed which should probably help with the monitoring of the engin? Althoug it doesn't monitor EGT as far as I know. I was thinking I'd leave the chip most of the time, but use it in off road if I feel a bit more power would be beneficial? But I'd rather save my engin than go a bit faster, somehow I feel allright doing 120km/h in the landy with my window open.
